Volunteerism Speech Given by LtCol Raul Gonzalez

Volunteerism

Being a volunteer without pay in social agencies or charitable organizations

according to the Webster’s New World Dictionary.

Volunteer services started with CAP during WWII when US citizens were worried

about their homeland coastlines. Individuals volunteered their own single engine

planes to start monitoring activity along the shores. Volunteered---they expected

no payment---just the benefit of knowing their homes and families would be

secure. The American way of life lends itself more and more to the world of

volunteers with today’s economy and natural disaster scenarios. We don’t get paid

to volunteer---we just do it. I do it because it’s how I feel within my spirit and

heart.

The CAP has three missions---emergency services, cadet programs and aerospace.

Civil Air Patrol exists today under a volunteer personnel arena. These personnel

give countless hours of their time and energy. In doing so, there is a personal

satisfaction and learning each individual gains. For example, today we did

community service---we provided assistance with parking cars and monitoring

flight line safety. Our presence offered a sense of security to the people attending

the air show.

People question, “who are you and what service do we belong to?” This is a great

opportunity to attract volunteers to the CAP as they learn of our ties to the United

States Air Force and the community benefits we provide through our various

missions.

Volunteerism relates to integrity, politeness, giving to one’s self---the survival of

Civil Air Patrol depends on you and I continuing to take on the missions required

of and perhaps asked of us to sustain the homeland peace we all desire.

One year has again passed. The Edmond Composite Squadron OK-002 has once

again volunteered and served many missions, assignments and various other areas

of responsibility with dignity. You have completed them all with success.

Thank you and Semper Vigilance.

Raul Gonzalez, LtCol, CAP
Squadron Commander

Happy Birthday Col. Gonzalez!

We would like to wish our Squadron Commander, Lt. Col. Raul Gonzalez a very happy and joyous birthday today!
